ECOPOCALYPSE CH.4 - KABOOM

ECOPOCALYPSE CH. 4 - KABOOM
By MJ Heiser

As you watch your sister introduce herself to the switchboard operator at the White House (can you believe they still process phone calls through a freaking switchboard?), something inside of you snaps.  Last night you were partying Bruce Wayne-style: lots of strangers—most of them in varying states of undress—gallons of booze, and lines of narcotics laying around. Through it all Milo was there as he always was, suspended upside-down and beer-bonging his way into the record books.  Now those party guests have the world's nastiest case of rotgut, and Milo . . .

You've just watched Milo die.

"Gotta go," you tell Madge.  She looks up from her phone call, her mouth slack as she registers the look of madness and desperation in your eyes.  You turn your back on the room even as she begins to fling at you reasons for you to stay.

"Wait!  I can get the President to neutralize everything!"

Fuck that, you think to yourself.  Somebody's got to pay.  Something's got to blow the fuck up.

You decide you need backup and you burst into a silent waiting room full of quarantined and terrified people.  In one corner are several burly guys you hope are either football linebackers or Navy SEALs.  You can tell already that the hospital staff are none too happy with the way you violated their weak excuse for quarantine; somebody has taken it upon themselves to set off a loud, insistent alarm.

Considering the fact that unknown numbers of security personnel are on their way to throttle you, you decide to cut about 98 percent of your speech.  "You guys want to just sit here and wait to find out if you're carrying the shits, or do you want to do something about it?"

Just as you'd hoped, the big burly guys stand up, biceps and pectorals twitching.  The biggest of them—your mind has already nicknamed him Hoss—smiles menacingly and says, "We thought no one would ever ask."

You're suddenly glad you've never been the publicity hound Steve Jobs was.  You're a virtual unknown.  "I know where the asshole who caused all this is keeping the master switch."

A guttural cry of assent breaks out among Hoss's friends, and they—along with several other twitchy people—follow you out of the waiting room.  You run towards the Emergency Room, and you hear distressing noises behind you, like Hoss and his friends are using their fists to prevent your capture.  You refuse to look back.  It will only slow you down.

You burst through the Emergency Room doors to a scene of depressing chaos.  There's shit on the walls in a startling variety of colors.  The smell in here is ghastly.  Your eyes start to water from the smell.

"Cover your mouths and noses!" you yell through your hand, hoping you haven't already caught the airborne nastiness.  You then spot the crash doors leading outside, and—miracle of miracles—there's an open ambulance waiting there.  "Come on!"

You weave your way through the equipment in the back of the ambulance and sit down at the driver's seat.  You feel the back of the ambulance sag a little under the weight of your burly new friends, and, without waiting to ensure everyone's on, you gun the engine.  You smell a distressing aurora of gasoline fumes around you and wonder if the last EMT driving this rustbucket ruptured a fuel line.

Fuck it.  The gas gauge says I have enough fuel even if I spill half of it on the way.  Okay, I have my crew, you think to yourself, giddy with excitement and high on adrenaline.  Now I need some explosives.

"Any of you guys know where I can find a few bombs?"

Dead silence from the back of the ambulance.

You turn around and see that all of your new friends have brown fluid leaking from their eyes.

Fuck.

"Did you think I wouldn't know who you are?" Hoss asks you as he advances on you.

"Wait," you say, whipping your head back around to not crash into a building.  "Come on, man."

"Were you really so arrogant to think that big guys like us don't keep up with scientific principles or breakthroughs?  What did you think we were, linebackers?"

You say nothing.  Again, you're hoping he's just angry and, of course, sick.  "I'm not the person you're looking for, dude, remember?  I'm taking you to the person responsible."

"We're fucked," Hoss says, inching closer.  You think you hear a clinking noise.  Shit is getting too real, so you swerve the ambulance to the emergency lane on the freeway and put it in park.  Then you turn back to see what's waiting for you.

Hoss now has something brownish coating the inside of his mouth.  His eyes are producing so much brown fluid it's falling in droplets from the edge of his square jaw.  You see that he's carrying a cylinder of oxygen in his hands.
"We're so . . .fucked," he says, his voice slurring a little.  He stumbles, but regains his balance on the edge of the gurney.  "I speak for all my guys when I say we aren't going to wait for this shit to take us.  We're going out, man.  But we aren't going alone."

You know enough about oxygen to know it can't burn by itself—but suddenly, you realize it doesn't have to.  That spilled-gas scent is stronger.
One of Hoss's friends has a match.  Another one has the emergency escape axe.

What happens next is so quick you'd think it had been rehearsed.  The guy with the match strikes it on the matchbook, then sets the rest of the book on fire, dropping it to the bottom of the ambulance.  Next, the guy with the axe buries it in the oxygen cylinder's neck with such force it splits the tank open.

The concussion from the explosion isn't the worst of it.  The worst of it is inhaling pure fire down your throat.

TIME DOUCHE CH. 5 - Hold Marie Hostage

TIME DOUCHE CH.5 - HOLD MARIE HOSTAGE
By Mandy Ward

“Um… yes actually, that is what I’m looking for, thank you mon ami.” You dredge the high school French from your brain and hold out your hand. “Can I have it back, please?”

Napoleon tilts his head. “First you will tell me what you are doing with Marie.”

“Nothing. We were just taking . . .a walk.” She frowns at you. What else am I supposed to say? Sorry mate, I was just going to run away with your bird and take her back to my own time?

Napoleon snorts. “No one just walks with a lady, especially with one as beautiful and important as my Marie.”

“I do.” You shrug.

“I don’t believe you. You were going to steal her away from me.” Napoleon tosses the communicator from hand to hand.

“I wouldn’t do that to you.” You look at Marie, trying to communicate to her that she needed to corroborate your story.

Napoleon looks at her as well. “Well, Marie? Is he right? Or were you about to leave me for some unknown foreigner?” The communicator makes another bounce from one hand to the other.

“Non, I would not do that, mon cher. He dragged me out here, muttering about finding something and leaving,” Marie tells him. She takes a step forward. “I want only to be with you!”

Napoleon’s face softens as she reaches towards him and takes another step. “I believe you, ma cherie.” He looks at you and you shudder at the rage in his eyes. “I will take this insult out of your hide!”

“Hey, I don’t care. I just want to go home.” You point at the communicator which still rests in Napoleon’s hand. “Give me that and you take your bitch of a princess back to your shack, where you can poke her all you want.”

Napoleon’s face turns puce. “You pig! How dare you insult her yet again? I would have merely let your blood a little. Instead I shall kill you!”

Drawing the dagger on your belt, you leap forward and grab Marie, holding the dagger to her throat. “You make one move towards your sword and your princess gains a new smile.”

Marie tries to scream and struggles against you. You push the dagger against her slender white throat and a drop of blood dribbles down, leaving a scarlet trail behind. “Don’t move sweetheart, I really don’t want to hurt you.” She stops moving. Thank God for that. I wouldn’t be able to hurt her, you think. I’d rather take her to heaven a different way. Marie’s perfume and the warmth from her body are making you wish that the two of you were somewhere private right now.

“Enough. What do you want, pig?” Napoleon’s tone is softer.

“Throw the communicator over here and I’ll let her go.” With you free hand you point to a spot to your right that is clear of stones.

“Dog. Pig. Let her go first!” the petite soldier spits, his face flushing puce again.

“What on God’s Green Earth are you doing now?” Nubleman shrieks from the communicator. “I told you to get back to the Time Machine and get out of there!”

The voice coming out of nowhere startles Napoleon and he literally jumps a foot into the air. The communicator flies out of his hand and drops hard onto a large rock, smashing into a hundred shreds of plastic, a scattering of computer chips and other electronic components.

You groan and drop the dagger from Maria’s throat, not caring that she dashes back to Napoleon as you wrench the door of the time machine open and start pressing buttons left, right and centre.

“What are you doing, you ignorant piece of filth? Come out of there and fight me like a man.” Napoleon shouts . . .except it comes out as "Que faites-vous, vous ignorant pièce d'immondices? Sortez de là et me batter comme un homme."

You ignore him and keep bashing buttons. Damn, without that translator I don’t understand a thing they are saying and without Nubleman, I don’t know how to work this thing! That red button looks promising, maybe it’s the starter? Jamming your thumb onto the red button, you are surprised to hear a genteel female voice say:

“Thank you for choosing the ten second self-destruct sequence. Please exit the Time Machine and retreat to a safe distance. This Time Machine will self-destruct in ten… nine…eight…”

Staring at the machine’s dashboard you mutter to yourself “Self-Destruct sequence? Nubleman, you really are crazy.”

“…seven…six…five…”

You back out of the machine and try to scramble up the hill as fast as possible, but Napoleon grabs hold of the back of your shirt and shouts at you again. “Où pensez-vous que vous allez? Revenez!”

I think I know what that means. I have to get out of here before the Time Machine blows up. You dredge your French language memory again. “Um…laissez-passer!”

“Non, chien. Le seul endroit où vous allez est en enfer.” Napoleon hauls you backwards with surprising strength for such a small man.

“…four…three…”

You land right in front of the time machine. You can smell acrid smoke drifting out from inside the dashboard and there are tiny sparks starting to flicker over the keys, so you try to roll away and Napoleon jumps on you, punching you hard in the face.

“…two…one… this Time Machine will now self destruct. Have a Nice day!” the voice says calmly and the dashboard explodes with a blast of flame, scattering glass and plastic like bullets.

Time slows down for you and you see Marie torn to shreds by glass, falling slowly to the ground as one piece of glass pierces her barely contained chest and kills her.

Napoleon is knocked off you by the detonation and comes crashing down onto the same rock that the communicator shattered on, his skull caving in, grey brain matter and red blood mingling as it flies out.

Above you, the machine rocks in the burst of energy and topples over. A torn steel strut twists and drops like a javelin towards you. Abruptly time speeds up again and you just have time to think Maybe I shouldn’t have threatened Marie after all… before it all goes black.

RED PLANET STOWAWAY CH.10 PISTOLS BLAZING

RED PLANET STOWAWAY CH.10 - PISTOLS BLAZING
By Tomara Armstrong

Smoke rises off the bodies on the floor, and the room is ripe with the smell of singed hair and skin. Your pistol begins to beep and you toss it to the floor--the battery is low.
Scavenging the fallen, you acquire new Martian pistols, a little larger than your NOSSA issue – you can’t help but smile at how light they are. You come across several small baubles each marked with a luminous green spade. Gas or grenade, you think as you stuff them into your pocket.

Either way, I win.

You hear the shuffling of feet outside the office. Crawling across the floor on your stomach you approach the door and crack it open.

The “King” is standing back as a small Martian army closes in on the door. From your crouched position, you have a clear shot of his royal highness. You think on it for a moment, and decide you have nothing to lose. You’re probably not going to make it out of here alive, so you might as well go all out.

Steady, aim, and fire…

You hit!

The King’s head explodes into the air and his body convulses. He doesn’t collapse. His arms flop erratically as his Martian innards gush skywards like a geyser back home.

You jump up from the floor and pump your guns in the air in victory. Maybe he was just a janitor, but who cares? That was cool as hell!

Your move has confused the Martian army, so you use this to your advantage. “I am an assassin!” You yell as you push open the office door, firing your pistols intermittently.

Ducking behind the Mars-A-Bon stand, you do a quick count between fires and are happily surprised that you’ve bagged a good eight to ten Martian toughs. Not too bad for flunking Firearms at Academy.

The sticky cinnamon buns are trying to break your focus, but you are on a winning streak. You slide the data cube across the concrete plaza. It sings as it soars to a stop fifty feet from you. You aim both pistols and fire.

They hit! You are on a roll, Assassin!

The shots ricochet and multiply--thanks to the prismatic components of the cube--and unleash sheer mayhem on the Martians. Body parts are disintegrating left and right as foreign-tongued screams of agony fill the air. You laugh hysterically, firing on the wounded to finish off the job.
Wearing the marks of war--Martian splatter on your boots and across your face-- you continue to fire at what is left of the Martian toughs. They are all down, but a few attempt to pull themselves behind garbage bins or try to shield themselves with their fallen comrades.

You are firing at everything, including the mannequins in shops outside of the hotel. You have accidentally maimed a few players from Team Earth in your killing spree, but you don’t care. You’re an animal. A weapon. A killing machine.

Bad Ass.

Silence.

A timer dings at the Mars-A-Bon signaling a fresh batch of yummy goodness. You drop you pistols and make your way to the stand, wiping your hands on your pants. A celebratory Mars-A-Bon is in order. The only thing that would make this moment better is a frosted mug of 2 % milk.
A moan makes you jump and reach into your pockets. The baubles are cold to the touch. You crouch down and scan the area. The only movement is a bloody mess a few feet away. You realize that this is not a threat and walk casually over to examine it thoroughly.

The Martian is missing both legs and has a massive wound to its middle. What can only be its Martian guts writhed out of the hole that sneaks a peak at the pavement below.

“Sucks to be you.” You laugh, accidentally dropping the baubles you were holding in your hand.

“Uh oh…” You jump back, but your foot is tangled in Martian guts, and you fall to the ground.

A green liquid leaks from the broken bauble and snakes toward you on the ground. “Shit!”

You vaguely remember something about that spade symbol. “What is it? What is it?”
You try to pull away from the mangled Martian, but the more you tug the more you become entangled.

The liquid slides closer as if it senses your presence. “What is it?” you shout.

It reaches your foot and slides up over your boot, into your sock and up your pants. A burning sensation overcomes you and you begin to convulse. It’s coming to you now. The spade… the spade… Martian testicles!. Harmless to Martians, Martian semen is capable of altering the physical state of the human form... breaking down human DNA and rebuilding a Martian-human hybrid.

Another REALLY helpful Academy class, and you slept right through it. Way to go, dumbass!
Covered in spunk, you lose consciousness, melting and folding in on yourself. Your NOSSA uniform flattens as you slip out of your collar and form an undulating green blob. Your eyes roll to the surface and patches of hair move across the new you.

Way to go Freakshow.

Congrats on the makeover.
