ECOPOCALYPSE CH.3 - TO THE LAB!

ECOPOCALYPSE CH.3 - TO THE LAB!
by John Elrod

Without saying anything more, you turn and walk right back out of the boardroom, leaving the actual suits to deal with public relations, lawsuits, and market projections. Frankly, you’re not usually any help with those things, anyway; you’re a scientist. You belong in the lab, which is exactly why you spend so much time there that, when you were having this state-of-the-art, skyscraping monolith constructed, you had them incorporate a private express elevator with three stops: the basement lab, where you almost always want to be; the boardroom, where you almost never want to be; and the roof, for when you want to be anywhere but here.

It takes a total of 47 seconds for the elevator to go from the boardroom to the lab. There is no ignominious Muzak or senseless dinging noise. In fact, the inside of this elevator is entirely without distraction; without those things shopping malls employ to keep you from realizing you don’t need to spend half a month’s salary on those shoes; without those tactics hospitals use to make you forget you’ve just seen a loved one for the last time. Yes, this elevator was absolutely boring in every way; you'd made sure of that because it takes a total of 47 seconds to go from the boardroom to the lab, and that’s 47 seconds of pure, unadulterated thought. It was in those 47 seconds that you had finally been able to think of how to bring the Environaut’s consumption-to-production ratio over 200%; it was those 47 seconds that had given you the idea for the iPoop, a toilet USB port that attaches to any toilet and uses your waste to directly charge any compatible device; and, on days like today, it’s those 47 seconds that simply keep you from going insane.

The opening of the elevator doors brings your serenity to a screeching halt as your ears are flooded with an expletive-laden tirade.

“How the fuck could this fucking happen? I fucking told those motherfuckers not to fucking use fucking mercury. This is un-fucking-believable.”

It’s Milo. He’s yelling at an empty room, but you know exactly what he’s upset about. Back when you and Milo were developing the Environaut, you hit upon a problem: it was introducing too much toxicity into the surrounding environment. Your solution was to replace the mercury you were using as a coolant with a gallium-indium alloy. It was an easy fix, but the Smart EcoGen board members weren’t thrilled about the expense of controlling the alloy’s wetting and aggressivity; it wasn’t cost-effective, but they agreed to the change—or so you thought.

Milo sees you come out of the elevator. “Can you fucking believe this? You’re the President and CE-FUCKING-O!”

“I know.”

“I’m the Vice Fucking President, for Christ sake.”

“I know.”

“This is just—”

“I know, and now we get to say, ‘We told you s—’”

Your snarky quip is interrupted by a video call from the boardroom. Milo is very eager to answer and throw some obscenities their way. He hurriedly presses the button, but on the screen is nothing but an empty boardroom.

“The damn thing must be broken.” Your voice tries to console Milo’s rage.

“Goddammit!” Milo’s rage is beyond consolation.

Suddenly a face come into the video’s frame. It’s Hal, the security guard. He’s still smiling through gritted teeth, but something is different about him. His skin is a jaundiced hue, his eyes are glazed over in a buttery haze, and his face is fixed in the same dead expression as those protesters who stormed your home.

“What the fuck?” Milo’s rage has given way to confusion, now.

“I don’t kn—”

You are interrupted once more, this time by a slurpy growl that seems to be coming from Hal’s throat. The gurgling gets louder, as Hal’s bite loosens just barely and his lips are overtaken by a thick, brown slurry. The sludge dribbles down Hal’s chest, while the lab has become a swamp of palpable fright. Slowly, Hal backs away from the camera, and you notice some of the board members are ambling about. Then you see it. There in Hal’s left hand, held firmly at the tuft of its neck, is the severed head of Smart EcoGen’s CFO, George Quellen Field.

“I second that ‘What the fuck?’” Now you’re the one speaking to the empty room as Milo has hastily evacuated to the elevator.

“Let’s make like Schwarzenegger and get to the fucking chopper!” How Milo can simultaneously make a pop culture reference and shit his pants, you don’t know, but he must be shitting his pants, because this is absolutely a “shit your pants” moment.

25 seconds into the longest 47 seconds of your life, and Milo is still rambling on about not knowing what is going on. Why doesn’t this elevator play music, or fucking ding, or just do anything to distract you from the thoughts wildly rampaging through your mind? There’s nothing to stop you from going insane! What sadistic bastard designed this torturous, 47 second device? But it’s not 47 seconds; not this time. This time, it’s 68 seconds, because you and Milo are going to the roof. More specifically, the helipad on the roof, and the two of you are getting as far away from this building as possible. Let the government come in and deal with this—literal—shit storm.

On the roof you both hop into the helicopter, but not before exchanging reassuring looks with one another. You’re both absolutely positive things are going to be fine. Maybe you’ll head down to Mexico for a couple weeks while things blow over. Sure, it’s a PR nightmare, and the stock is going to take a hit. Blah, blah, blah. None of that concerns a couple of genius lab rats like you and Milo. It’s fine.

You’re the pilot, of course, since you are the one with a pilot’s license. Milo, for lack of a better word, is your co-pilot, even though he can’t even manage to write with a Pilot pen, let alone have anything to do with piloting a helicopter. You set your heading for Mexico, and—

“What’s that?” Milo is gesturing downward.

You don’t want to look, but you have to. What you see are the streets clogged with abandoned vehicles and crowds of people moving at two distinctive speeds. Those running are doing so from those walking; those walking are those who didn’t run fast enough. You’ve seen this in movies, and you’ve lived this in video games. You’ve always thought it might happen, but you didn’t have any idea you could cause it. You can’t go to Mexico; you have to do something, because everything is decidedly not fine.

Do you...

A. Land the helicopter at the hospital, where your sister works, and see if she can help--if she's even still alive.

B. Land the helicopter at the police station, where you're sure to be abel to the get hold of some firearms, them come out blasting.

C. Land the helicopter somewhere outside the city and try to devise a plan.

ECOPOCALYPSE CH.2 - TO THE DELOREAN!

ECOPOCALYPSE CH.2 - TO THE DELOREAN!
By Annie Evett

You pound the table for emphasis. “ Listen up here, you bunch of sissies. You get paid the big bucks to react to shit like this. Do your freaking job.”

Milo bites his hand to stifle a giggle. The stress has obviously gotten to him.

“Where the hell is the Marketing team?”

A manicured hand shoots up in the back. “Maria Britanny from Marketing.”

You point at her. “Get a spin on this; blame the Chinese for their poor work practices and child labor factories. India can’t withdraw their contract. Remind them that most of the online and phone support from a large proportion of tech companies are routed to them, and they will lose billions if they do withdraw. Korea has problems with its whole weirdo government and hairstyles. Do something with that, will you?”

“Uh, the hairstyles of the government?” Someone clears his throat. “Are you talking about North Korea?”

“What?” You bluster. “Aren’t they the same place? North, South, not that different surely.”

The boardroom shuffles uncomfortably as a dozen sets of eyes bore into the table in front of them.

“What about Sweden?” quavers a question from the sides.

“I hate them because they all look so damned healthy and happy outdoors.” You puff your chest out, filled with an unnatural confidence. You feel like J.R. from the old Dallas show.

Paul Poppins from Public Relations glares across the table at the head of Marketing. “I think you’ll find that Public Relations will do a better job at negotiating those areas, rather than the gloss and pomp department.”

A shriek cuts the air as Maria’s manicured hands find their way around Paul’s throat.

“I don’t give a rats ass who does it. Make it so.” You look off into the distance, wishing you’d mentioned number two or tried for a better Pickard voice.

Todd Brammers taps on his iPad, darkening the room and illuminating the wide expanse of one of the walls. You wish he would use up to date equipment. He projects several channels of live news reports into spots around the wall. Images of tattered humanoids stumble across the wall. Wide-eyed reporters breathlessly relate to their audiences what they are experiencing—that is, until the shit-covered masses reach the TV crew and the camera is dropped, the operator is dragged away or fled. Real life re-enactments of the Blair Witch Project are relayed on multiple screens. Screams are cut off into gurgling, pathetic drowning sounds. You gulp.

“There is no way of making this go away with marketing OR public relations. Environaut is the cause for all of this. We need to shut down immediately and regroup under Chapter 11.”

You push your hands through your hair. You don’t even know what Chapter 11 is.

“Fine!” You yell. “ Do the Chapter 11 thing. Shut down production—but I still want my spin happening.” You cling to the J.R. image.

“Will you be coming with us then?” Scott Black, the Head of Mergers and Acquisitions, asks you.

“What? Me? No, Milo and I need to check out the Flux Capacitors and gamma reactors in the proton isolators. Science geek stuff. You know.”

Nods from around the room confirm that none of them understand what that means, but they are all relieved that they have a plan to execute without the CEO breathing down their necks.

“Come on Milo, we need to go.” You grab Milo's coat jacket and shove him through the door.

He explodes with laughter. “What the hell was that in there? Flux capacitors? And you know you still have shit on your forehead.”
You wipe it off. “If you’re not with me, go back to the boardroom and do whatever Chapter 11 is,” you fume. “This shit has gotten serious. I can’t understand what’s come unraveled and how it's happened so quickly.” You both stride toward the exit.

“So what's the plan, Kimo Sabe?”

“Get back to the DeLorean and just drive. I do my best thinking when I'm on the road.” Your mind is rattling off possibilities, reformulating the plans of the Environaut.

You and Milo climb into the car and exit the carpark. Hal waves as you leave, not bothering to stand. You are sure he is laughing behind the magazine in front of his face. The outer perimeter of the security fence surrounding the Smart EcoGen HQ is slowly filling with picketers. You drive out as quickly as you can, hoping they won't notice you.

“It can’t be the recycling processors,” you mumble.”That had been tested for years in the earlier versions.” You steer the car onto the freeway and headed south. If nothing else, a trip to Mexico would clear the mind.

“What does this thing do?” Milo pokes a covered switch.

“Surely the diagnostic console didn’t reboot after the—”

“Hey, if I push this, will anything happen?” Milo doesn't wait for an answer and pushes the red, candy-like button. The DeLorean accelerates suddenly. The speedometer slowly creeps up to 88 miles per hour.

“Did you say something about a Flux Capacitor?” Milo grins. ‘Don’t thank me now. Let's go back in time and fix this mess. Then you can shower me with gifts and double my salary.”

The body of the car begins to shake as the inside glows blue. You take your hands off the wheel. You paid a mint for the car, and the previous owner stressed its authenticity. You grin, suddenly thinking of all the dumbass things you are going to fix up on your trip back in time. You decide you will scrap the Environaut and introduce either the Wii or Xbox to the market years before the original developers have a whiff of an idea of the gaming platforms. Hell, you may decide to do both.

Dials on the dashboard spin. “Shit. We need to set a date. Let's set it for when we met at college, convince ourselves not to bother and —”

“Just set the date, idiot. We are nearly at 88 miles per hour.”

“And running out of clear road.” The freeway ends, and you enter suburbia.

The speedometer slowly creeps around as the car surges forward. Tiny blue lights flash within the cabin. You cover your eyes. “It's 88 miles an hour. So long present day. You suck!”

The Delorean slams into the wall of a low set apartment block. Glass splinters as the steering wheel drives its way through your chest. Your ribs shatter as your lungs burst from the sudden impact. Your neck whips back and forth, breaking in the process. It flops to the side as blood seeps out of your nose and mouth. Milo’s body is ripped apart from the impact. Gore hangs in tendrils in what is left of the Delorean.

You seriously didn’t think a flux capacitor exists, did you? Back to the start.

CHOOSE THE STORY FOR SEASON 4!

It’s been too long, hasn’t it? You thought we’d forgotten you, right? Wrong. Season 4 is nearly upon us. The only thing left to do is for you, our adoring and long-suffering (not to mention patient) fans and readers to pick the story you want us to
write.

Read through the following story lines and then pick your favourite. It’s as simple as making cupcakes from play-dough. We’ve all done this, right? Right?
Polls close at the end of the week. Be nice.

THE CHOICES

1.  You wake, your face stuck to the salt encrusted wooden floor. You spit a putrid rag out of your mouth and your stomach lurches until you realise that the whole floor has rolled and you are in the bottom of a ship. A large scrubbing brush lands beside you as a gruff voice chases away any doubt that you are nowhere near the seaside pub you'd been staying at. "Look lively lad. Welcome aboard the Eternal. Captain’s waiting for you and the other volunteers."  With laughter ringing in your ears, you stumble up the stairs to join a huddle of bewildered youths, no doubt press ganged in the same way you had been.

2.  After being injected with a super steroid, Cows become self-aware, rise up against their human oppressors and raise an army of vegetarians to subdue and enslave carnivores. You are a member of a rebel faction fighting back against your bovine overlords. Moo!

3. You are the newest debutante author on the block. Your books about domination and submission have given you world-wide fame. Women around the world are buying your books at phenomenal rate. Only a woman could understand women this well, then the truth comes out....you are a man.

4. It finally happened. You knew it was going to happen. Everyone knew it was going to happen. It was only a matter of time. Zombies have taken over the world. Maybe not so predictably, these zombies have no interest in devouring human flesh. In fact, they think that's gross. Nope, these zombies want sex. It's all they want and they want it all the time. They also have herpes.

5. After a heavy night of booze, babes and banging, you wake up to find yourself in the middle of a field. This wouldn't normally be a problem, but right above you in the early morning sky is a blood red moon with a second green moon a little way north of it. Sitting up, you realise that the second moon is actually the Earth and you are... where?

6. Early in your career as a young scientist, you created a revolutionary new product that is now used in most homes around the world. You were lucky and retired at a young age, so now you spend most days in bed--plugged into online gaming or B-movie marathons. You're blissfully unaware that people are getting sick around you--developing strange symptoms, acquiring strange tastes--until the media starts blaming you and picketers line up in front of your sparkly mansion. You refuse to answer the phone or peel yourself away from your PS3 to make a comment, but when a home invasion of the weirdest kind makes you see reason, you're forced into a new role. What will it be?

7. You are a top notch investigational reporter and secret agent in 2042.  You've been assigned to unearth the programmer responsible for the creation of the robot assassins who have taken out all of the leaders in the solar system and have overthrown the galaxy, placing it into marshal law.  Your mission is to uncover the programmer, travel back in time and stop the program algorithm before it is completed in 2013, when all of civilized society is thrown back into the dark ages, before calculators existed!

8.  You are driving home from a long and boring week of work. As you stop at a red light, your passenger door opens and a small child slips in, closing and locking the door. They slump into the foot well and look up at you with frightened eyes. "Please help me. They are going to kill me."  Before you can react, you hear the rumbling sound of motorbikes as they slowly cruise down between the waiting cars. You shift your briefcase on top of the child's head and stare at the red light hoping it will turn green before the Neanderthal on the Harley stops at your window.

9. You're an aging rock star who switches bodies with a marine biologist who's studying sharks.  Since you don't know what you're doing (and you're still a little drunk and high from your last party), you leave the safety of the cage you were in and get in a little trouble.

10. You're a demon working undercover in the 'streets' of Heaven, trying to expose the criminal actions of God and his band of angels."

11.  You and your girlfriend have just spent a week cruising around the islands in Thailand. You wake one morning to find that she has completely disappeared from the boat. Her snorkel gear is still wet, but placed carefully in its normal spot.  None of her possessions have been moved or taken. You find a note tied to the wheel, simply saying, "Return the Jewels and you'll get her back."  You've no idea what it’s taking about.

12. It wasn’t serendipity that brought her into your store naked. She had red hair, big tits and was on a mission. But neither one of you knew it was all about you.

13. You're a 19th century Canadian schoolteacher who finds out there are vampires in the village cemetery.  You decide to take on the undead by yourself.

14. You and a friend stand outside an old dilapidated house. Your friend dares you to walk through the house and bring something out to prove you went in. While inside you open the door to a closet and notice an opening to a secret passage. However there is an enormous spider hanging from the doorway, and you have a huge phobia of spiders. Just as you are about to shut the door and move on, a ghost flies at you with burning angry eyes. Do you fight the spider and head for the secret
passage, or do you stand and fight with the ghost?

HARDWOOD BLOOD CH.7 - THE NEW FASHIONED WAY

BLOOD ON THE CONCRETE HARDWOOD CH.7 - THE NEW FASHIONED WAY
By Rashelle Workman

It seems impossible, but your gut’s telling you the fancy-fingered globetrotters, those guys you were counting on to help you solve this case, are involved. Maybe even the crazy mofo’s who’ve been killing the girls and keeping their insides. Sick. Sick. Sick!

How’d I miss the signs, you wonder, smacking your forehead.

Rage fills you. The idea of being duped and played like one of their basketballs rips through your brain, until you scream. “Aaaaaugh! It’s time for answers.” And you’ve got a plan.

Digging through Kareem’s tremendously large trunk of trinkets, you find a full body disguise. With a quick look around the alley, you strip and don a suit that looks remarkably like Clive, the Trotter’s old coach. Once you’re squished in, you search the trunk for a mirror. You’ve gotta check out your new face.

Amongst all the hairy wigs, dentures and masks, you notice, at the very bottom, a small red button. It seems to be screaming: “Push me! Push me!”

 So you do.

And suddenly the trunk and the ground underneath you begin to tremor. It looks like the whole place is shaking. “Holy earthquake, that button broke the Universe!” The words sound ridiculous floating away on the sour smelling wind, but you’re freaked.

There’s a twinkle and then the shaking stops. Relieved you turn to bolt and notice you aren’t in the alley anymore. Instead you seem to be inside a glorious, glamorous hallway.

The maroon carpet under your shoes feels plush, the walls have been wallpapered gold and maroon. Unable to help yourself, you place a hand against the wall. It’s soft, like crushed velvet. The ceiling is high above you and expensive chandeliers dangle every five feet. The hallway seems to go on forever.

“Where in the world am I?”

Going for your gun, you reach into the holster. When your hand finds emptiness, you remember you aren’t wearing your clothes anymore. You’re wearing Clive.

Shuddering, you say, “On my own, just the way I like it.” The tremble of your bottom lip begs to differ. You’ve been in some crazy-assed situations in your life, but this wins—

“Hey, I thought it was my turn to feed her.”

You move toward the sound of the voice somewhere up ahead.

Part of you wants to shout for help. But experience has taught that announcing your arrival before you know where the hell you are, is a bad idea.

Instead you listen, searching for the whereabouts of the voice. Snooping’s your job. Quickly you’re rewarded. There’s screaming, laughing and arguing. It sounds like a party. And the Trotters are hosting. Here . . . wherever here is.

On your left is a door. Placing your ear against it, you eavesdrop.

“Hang on. I’m going to go check on Kareem. He should’ve been here already.”

The door swings open and you fall into Curly, knocking him and you to the floor.

“What the hell? Clive?” Curly says, pushing you off.

The other Trotters come over and two of them help you to your feet.

“Cllliiivvvvve. Right,” Sweetwater says, punching you in the gut.

“Grab the Clive wannabe,” Curly says.

Two of the Trotters take one of your arms in their hands and drag you over to a wall full of water. Yeah, that’s right. It’s a fish tank the size of a wall! If you weren’t so freaked you’d think it was awesome. The damn thing is full of fish, dolphins and . . . Sharks?

“What the hell’s going on guys? What are you playing at?”

“Watch,” Sweetwater says.

Three girls appear in the tank, their hair floating around them. Pointed teeth exposed cruelly as they wave at you. One of them points a finger at you and then curls it, beckoning.

Your mind tries to reject what’s in front of you. Because the girls in the mermaid suits look a lot like the dead women with the missing insides.

The Trotters start to laugh.

“She wants you.”

“You should see your face.”

“Yeah, let’s see his face.” Curly rips off the mask.

You breathe a sigh of relief. Within the mask stank of cement glue.

“Again, what the hell guys? I thought we were supposed to be working together to solve murders. These girls . . . why aren’t they dead?”

Sweetwater scratches his chin. “Let’s just say they aren’t dead . . . anymore.”

“Huh?”

Twiggy continues, “Look friend. The tricks. The stunts we pull on the court. It takes a certain kind of . . . magic to do what we do.”

“Maybe we should demonstrate.”

Twiggy and Curly take you over to a door. Sweetwater pushes it open. Your socks are knocked off at the smell. The ocean. You swear you can even hear seagulls. The Trotters drag you up the stairs and stop at the top.

The mermaids are waiting for you.

“They’re gonna take you to meet our boss. Don’t struggle and you might get to come back. Got it?”

“Don’t do this. I can’t swim,” you whisper, a new kind of terror stealing through your veins.

“No worries.”

They toss you in. And before you even have a chance to fight, the mermaids have you in their clutches and are dragging you down. There’s another door and one of the girls knocks. It opens. The girl to your right smiles.

And then they shove you in.

The room smells damp, but it’s dry. Your body is on solid ground. A drip-dripping catches your attention, but it’s too dark to see anything.

Except two glowing yellow eyes.

“Welcome. I’ve been waiting for you,” a voice growls.

Something hard splits your chest, grabs your heart and tears it out. Strangely, you still feel it beating.

“The boys will get five years of magic for you. Score!” The deep voice rumbles, like the Earth itself is laughing. “Let’s make the Trotters’ day and send you back as a crab.”

“Score,” you think as you’re tossed into the tank. One of your large pincher smacks you in the eye.

I’m hungry. Where’s the fish?

 The End.

CHOOSE THE STORY FOR SEASON 3!

We've kept you waiting long enough.

It's time for the insanity to begin anew.

It's time for, Season 3!

As always, the choice of story is in your hands. Read through the choices below and cast your vote for what story you'd like the COD Crew to take a stab at. You pick it and we'll write it. It's as simple as that.

Be nice.

The polls close on Monday afternoon!

THE CHOICES

1. You step out of the shower and discover you've entered the 1st circle of hell. You've got to escape the 9 circles within 6 days or you'll burn in hell forever.

2. You wake up one morning to find you've grown a tail and pointy ears. Now you have to figure out why and run from the crazy scientist who wants to turn you into a lab rat.

3. You arrive for a vacation in Cancun to discover a hurricane is headed right for your resort.

4. You awake on the back of your horse trotting along the edge of a desert canyon. Within the canyon is a pirate shipwrecked, on the horizon is a town set ablaze, and you're soaking wet with salt water.

5. You are on a beach holiday and a Bottle washes up on the shore at your feet. Inside the bottle is a ring and a message; message reads "Put me on". You put the ring on...

6. You wake up laying on a gurney in the hospital morgue. You notice the medical examiner currently has his back to you, talking with the officer who shot you after you murdered the shop keeper. Do you slip off of the gurney and go for the cops gun or do you slip out the door while no one is looking.

7. You are a camerman for the hit TV show Jurassic Jaunt and there's only 2 problems: A) the scientists created monstrous versions of nature's extinct reptiles and B) most of the contestants and TV control building just got made dead by the restored creatures. The last thing you heard was a radio call from an incoming helicopter and you have 16 hours to make the harrowing journey through the dino-infested jungle and past any surviving contestants to secure your spot on rotored salvation.

8. Your shadow won"t stop farting and there's no way to get away from it.

9. You’re a genius; a very bored genius working as a janitor in top secret government compound that houses advanced weaponry. A chain of unfortunate events has you quit your job, torch the place, and take off with a shit-ton of big-boy (or girl) toys. You turn to your comic book collection to determine your fate. Shall you become a hero, or the villain?

10. Election Day and you're the shit-hot favourite to be the next president of the United States; that is, until your mother turns up and says you're not her child, you're not even an American...and you're not even from Earth. Do you keep quiet and hope this goes away or do you seek out the truth? The clock is ticking...

11. You're a hard-nosed gumshoe and you're hot on the trail of a killer known only as Dead Hooker Harry. Unfortunately you can't solve this one alone. It's too tough. You'll need the help of your old friends, The Harlem Globetrotters.

12. You're an author locked in a mansion with 13 other authors writing a Choose or Die story. Unfortunately one of the other authors wants to take all the credit for the amazingly well written story and is killing the rest of the other authors off after every chapter. Who is it and how will you survive?

13. Walking home you're struck by lightning. Instead of a good zap, you are warped into an alternate world filled with creatures of myth and folklore and everything else. The only way to get home is to successfully complete a series of tasks each with it's own risks and temptations purposely masterminded to cause you to fail. Danger lurks at every corner. Will you make it out alive?

14. You stumble out of bed, rubbing your eyes. You blink trying to make out the bleary shapes within your bedroom. A scorching spotlight is suddenly switched on and you feel your retinas burning with the intensity. A booming voice surrounds you. “For your crimes against humanity, you will be punished. Clemency has been granted however and you have the choice of three doors. The first will take you to a space in time where can alter those decisions, the second will take you to a space in time where you must live with the results of your crimes, the third will take you straight to the courtroom where you will be tried. Choose wisely.”

TIME DOUCHE CH. 2 - TIME TO DUEL

TIME DOUCHE CH.2 - TIME TO DUEL
By Jason Campbell

Dressed? Probably a good idea, you think to yourself as you slide the door open one more time. The three men haven’t noticed the time machine yet, but it won’t be long until you’re in full view. The compartment with the clothes slides open easily enough. Once you have the clothes spread out, you begin to rethink the idea of getting dressed.

“Pantaloons? Frilly shirts? Where the hell are the Nike and Christian Audigier?” You ask Thomas.

“Don’t you think you might stick out just a little wearing modern clothing in the 1700s?” He responds with his usual snobby attitude. “You really are a douche, aren’t you?”

Ignoring his remarks, you dress yourself in these God-forsaken clothes. It’s only slightly better than being naked. Outside the machine you can hear a horse neigh nearby. The three men are getting closer.

Avons-nous côté avec le roi?” asks one of the men.

“French? They’re speaking French!” you say, holding the transmitter to your mouth. “How the hell am I supposed to communicate?!”

Did you forget my warning not to fuck up history? No talking to anyone!” Nubleman’s voice explodes from the speaker in your pocket. It’s a little unnerving to hear your crotch talking to you. “But on the off chance you have to, second compartment down from the clothes you’ll find what looks like a small bandage. It’s a universal translator. Stick it to your neck and it will not only translate what they are saying, but it will translate your Neanderthal speech to them.”

The voices are even closer now; time is running out. You slap on the translator and prepare to step out the door to try and hide the machine. It’s then you realize that there is no material close by with which to disguise it. You glance around the side of the machine and realize that you are precariously balanced at the top of a tall hill. Without giving a thought to how this might turn out, you step back into the Time Machine and begin rocking it back and forth.

“Please don’t tip forward,” you whisper.

What?” comes Thomas’ voice dripping with concern.

“Ahh…nothing,” you say as you slam your shoulder into the back of the machine. You feel it begin to tip backwards. Everything seems to be happening in slow motion. The heads of the men appear at the top of the hill as you punch the button to close the door. Your vertical world is all of sudden diagonal, then horizontal.

“Oh shit!” You shout as your body slams against the back wall. Gravity is a bitch and now she is taking her vengeance on you. Tossed around like a two-dollar salad at the local buffet, your body is pitched back and forth across the machine as it rolls down the hill. The blood stain of some poor critter appears on the outside of the glass walls.

Damn, I hope that doesn’t affect the space/time continuum, you think to yourself.

The machine continues to pick up speed and so does your stomach. It lurches once, twice, and then you feel the inevitable kick of your stomach trying to empty its contents. Swallowing, you fight back the gag reflex. That would have been nasty.

The machine seems to have hit a flat spot as the bounces don’t seem quite as violent. You try and catch a glimpse of the landscape but all you see is a blur of green, then blue, then green, then blue. This ride has to stop soon. As if someone heard your silent wish, the machine rolls to a stop…and then begins to fill with water.

“You’ve got to be shittin’ me! Can anything else go wrong?”

What, WHAT?” Thomas is screaming into the speaker, “What have you done to my machine?”

“Nothing, why?” You respond while desperately reaching for the door button. The door slides silently open and you hop out and into a foot of water. The machine comes to a rest at the edge of small pond. Slipping behind the machine and about a foot deeper in the water, you begin pushing the machine out of the water.

Why do I hear the sloshing of water?” Thomas asks in a panicked voice.

“Don’t worry about it, I’m dealing with it.”

Dealing with what?”

Ignoring Nubleman’s wailing, you manage to, with some effort and a lot of grunting, roll the time machine out of the pond and behind a stand of bushes. Stuck in 18th century France, you wonder what to do to kill an hour. I’m sure if Nubleman was here, he would just be sitting hidden in the trees, observing like some sort of voyeuristic bird-watcher. You seemed to have rolled to a stop in the middle of some peasant’s farm. Walking over to the fence, you hear the distinctive sound of metal crashing against metal. Could it be? Swords? A duel? They had those in the past right?

You vault over the fence like some fourteen year old Olympic gymnast and take off at a sprint towards the sound. Out of the corner of your eye, you spot the three men that you saw earlier. It appears at some point they have dismounted their horses. Maybe you didn’t get away as cleanly as you thought. They seem to be walking with a purpose straight towards you. Somewhere around the next corner the sword fight seems to be taking place. You pick up the pace and disappear out of sight of the three men.

With a fist pump and a mental Yes!, you find that there is a duel happening. The younger of the two men is dressed like the three men from the hill. The other is a little older and is dressed somewhat similar but in darker colors.

“Is a girl really that important to lose your life over?” Says the older man.

“I plan to ask for her hand in marriage,” replies the younger man. “Now let’s begin.” Without warning the older man’s blade flashes out, but just misses as the young man snaps his head to the side. The younger man thrusts back, cutting through a layer of the other man’s coat. It’s like a car wreck; you just can’t stop watching.

A sound somewhere behind you reminds you that the three men are still following you. It looks like today’s entertainment is going to be cut short. You figure with a quick jog you can get around the next curve, slip back up the hill and back down to the time machine without the three men being the wiser.

What is that sound?” Nubleman interjects as if he just woke up. “Tell me it’s not the time machine. It sounds like a sword fight. Tell me you didn’t start a sword fight!”

“Shhh…” you whisper at your pocket. “There are people around!” Your warning comes seconds too late as the older man is distracted. The young man takes advantage of the interruption and skewers his opponent. The life in the older man’s eyes disappears. At the same time the three men come around the corner.

“Stop!” They shout in unison at you -- or you are assuming at you. The young man is confused and turns to you.

“You saw, it was a fair fight. Tell them it was a fair duel.” He pleads with you.

“I think they want me,” you answer.

“Why, what did you do?”

“Nothing I know of.”

“Come with me,” he says, “I might be able to help. By the way, my name is Napoleon.”

Bonaparte?!” Both you and your pocket say.

Will you...

A: Take your chances with trying to outrun the three men following and make your way back to the time machine later?

B: Pick up the older man’s sword and prepare to fight your way back to the time machine?

C: Follow Napoleon and hope that your interference doesn’t change the course of history?

CHOOSE THE STORY FOR SEASON 2!

The time has arrived! Season 2 is right around the corner, and we need your help in choosing our next story!

Below are 11 possibilities dreamt up by this season's crew. Read through them, pick the one you like, place your vote below, and we'll do our best to write it up.

It's so simple a monkey could do it.

A really dumb monkey.

The monkey the other monkey's always laugh at.

Not that I'm calling you a dumb monkey or anything...no, that would be rude.

CHOOSE THE STORY FOR SEASON 2!

A. You're separated from your coworkers during a team building exercise and you get lost in a carnival. You're stuck inside after the places closes, and things go bad in the night. Find your way out.

B. You get off a train at Grand Central Station, only it's not the New York you were expecting. Your family are not there to greet you. Instead you're faced with an army of spider-like robots, each with an Amazonian warrior woman by their side. They're looking for you. Which way do you run?

C. Beneath the slimy mud of a lonely planet on the outer rim sleeps a terrible menace. You and a group of pioneers from earth are dropped in an effort to colonize the planet and one of you wakes the creature. Can you survive long enough to be rescued?

D. You wake up in the desert without a stitch of clothing and no idea how you got there. The night before you were at a hotel convention for high tech weapons industry and came face to face with your ex. Being in a good mood and forgiving, you go to dinner with them. Now you wonder if maybe there was another purpose to that supposedly random meeting.

E. you're taking a vacation in a far off land. You get on the wrong train and witness something totally bad (ie murder kidnapping something). No one believes you and you get kicked off of the train for having no ticket... but someone knows you've seen something you shouldn't have. Now you're on the run!

F. You're an aging A-list celebrity (by tinsel-town's standards) who begins losing roles to younger celebs. You make a drastic decision to go under the knife, but are not prepared for the results.

G. You're a rookie package delivery person. You're making the last delivery of your first week on the job to a small office. There is no receptionist and you begin to search the office for someone to sign for your package (lol...I said package). You open a door (that should have been locked) and you accidentally step into the secret lair of the city's most loved super hero.

H. You become the heir of a very distant relative's fortune in the Republic of Kalmykia*. Along with it, comes the added responisbility of his genetically mutated pets, reanimated corpses, and maintenance of his secret lair. While your relative is closely tied with the World Domination Front, you have a heart of gold and love for all living things. You hope to use your newly aquired wealth to right the wrongs and injustices in the world, but in the meantime you will focus on the local corrupt and the upcoming Chess Olympiad.

I. You're on vacation and your plane gets sucked into the vortex that is the bermuda triangle. On the other side you find the lost city of Atlantis which is currently at war. How will you get out alive?

J. You disguised your time machine as your shower; it malfunctioned, and now you're naked in 18th century France

K. You are a mercenary who, upon taking a new contract, is inducted into a secret society with the aim of killing the monarch.
